FDA Proposes to Stop Allowing Brominated Vegetable Oil in Food, Says Red Dye 3 May Be Next

Due to concerns about harms to human health, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed to revoke the regulation that authorizes the use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food. The agency also announced its intent to review three other possibly toxic, FDA-regulated food additives that were recently banned in the state of California, and announced that a decision about red dye 3 is forthcoming.

Woman charged with murder in mushroom poisoning case

Police in Australia have charged a woman as part of an investigation into the deaths of three people from suspected mushroom poisoning. Homicide squad detectives from Victoria Police arrested a 49-year-old woman at her home in the town of Leongatha earlier this week. The suspect, Erin Patterson, is the daughter-in-law of the couple who died. Patterson has been charged with three counts of murder and five of attempted murder.

Study: High Levels of Heavy Metals Found in Select Chocolate Products

An October 2023 report released by Consumer Reports found high levels of cadmium and lead in select dark chocolate products, included those from Hershey’s, Trader Joe’s, and other popular brands. The group’s scientists tested 28 dark chocolate bars for heavy metals, and detected cadmium and lead in all of them.
