CDC says Salmonella Cantaloupe Outbreak over – But, not for the likely 22,000 victims

At least 407 sick in the U.S. and 164 in Canada sickened with a total of 13 deaths. Interesting fact, according to the CDC, for every one person who is a stool-culture confirmed positive victim of Salmonella in the United States, there is a multiple of 38.5 who are also sick but remain uncounted. (See, AC Voetsch, “FoodNet estimate of the burden of illness caused by nontyphoidal Salmonella infections in the United States,” Clinical Infectious Diseases 2004; 38 (Suppl 3): S127-34).

Around 300 deaths in the United States are caused by Listeria infection each year, according to estimates from a 2011 CDC report. Listeria bacteria are most found in raw foods. Vegetables can be contaminated by soil and water carrying bacteria.

Number of children with excess lead traced to cinnamon applesauce continues to rise

The CDC is reporting that more than 380 children are now involved in an outbreak of lead poisoning traced to pouches of cinnamon applesauce. It is the second time in the space of a few months that Campylobacter infections have been linked to Lindsay Farm brand organic raw milk.
