More details about recalled peaches, plums, and nectarines linked to a deadly outbreak of infections from Listeria monocytogenes have become available. Eleven people from coast to coast have been sickened, with one reported dead and the other ten hospitalized. Whole genome sequencing linked the patients together using DNA fingerprints of the pathogen.

More cantaloupe recalled in connection with a deadly outbreak of Salmonella infections

New recalls of fresh cantaloupe have been made in connection with a Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 99 in the United States and killed two. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the outbreak is ongoing, and additional patients are expected to be identified. A related outbreak involving the same brand of cantaloupe is ongoing in Canada and has sickened 63, killing one.

Study finds more evidence of bacteria in raw meat pet food

Scientists have found a strong association between dogs excreting ciprofloxacin-resistant E. coli and feeding them a raw diet. E. coli, which can lead to food poisoning, is also the United Kingdom’s top cause of urinary tract and bloodstream infections. Ciprofloxacin belongs to a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, which treat bacterial infections in humans and animals.

Provincial health officers in Alberta say the Fueling Minds kitchen can only serve one of the 11 daycare centers that were closed during the E. coli outbreak that sickened 448 people and impacted 1,595 children who had to seek care while centers were closed.
