MFHA Leader Announces His Retirement

Gerry A. Fernandez, the founder and president of the Multicultural Foodservice & Hospitality Alliance, will turn the page on a new chapter in 2024. After 27 years at the helm of MFHA, Fernandez today announced his intention to retire on Dec. 31, at which time he will transition to an advisory role. MFHA will conduct a national search for his successor.

If finalized, the proposed rule would, among other things, revise the weighing methods used to determine the standard fill of container, allow the use of safe and suitable flavorings and spices as optional ingredients, and clarify that the use of a packing medium is optional.

Salmonella outbreak linked to ShopRite ground beef declared over by CDC

The CDC has declared an outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul infections to be over with 18 people having been sickened. Investigators linked the outbreak to ground beef sold at ShopRite stores in the Northeast, according to a notice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of the 18 patients, seven were so sick they had to be hospitalized. Patients were from four states.

China records a rise in domestic foodborne outbreaks.

The number of domestic foodborne outbreaks in China has increased over 10 years, according to a study. Researchers analyzed the cause of household foodborne disease outbreaks from 2010 to 2020 using data from the National Foodborne Disease Surveillance System. A total of 17,985 outbreaks, which resulted in 73,252 illnesses, 38,829 hospitalizations, and 1,269 deaths, were reported.

FDA Seeks Comments on Lowering Brix Level in Pasteurized Orange Juice

The FDA has put out a call for input on whether the Brix level (the minimum soluble solids content) in pasteurized orange juice needs to be amended. The request comes on the heels of a July 22 petition from the Florida Citrus Processors Association and Florida Citrus Mutual asking FDA to decrease the Brix level from 10.5% to 10%, citing a bacterial disease called “citrus greening” and severe weather as lowering the average level over the last couple of decades.
