Consumers complain of wood pieces in Nestle cookie dough; recall launched

Nestlé USA has initiated a recall of some Nestlé Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough “break and bake” bars after consumer complaints of wood fragments in the product. This recall is for two batches of the 16.5-ounce “break and bake” cookie dough products that were produced on April 24 and 25, 2023.

Warning issued after bread is linked to nearly 200 illnesses in Portugal

Health officials in Portugal have warned against eating a type of bread after almost 200 people fell sick in recent weeks. The Directorate-General of Health (DGS) said 187 suspected cases of food poisoning have been recorded associated with the consumption of broa de milho (a type of cornbread) in certain areas of the country between July 21 and August 9.

NRC discovers novel seafood toxin that causes ciguatera poisoning

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) has unearthed a novel seafood toxin responsible for ciguatera poisoning. The toxin, known as ciguatoxin, is found in large fish such as barracuda, moray eel, snapper and grouper, and can cause tingling and numbness in fingers and toes, nausea, abdominal pain, and even poisoning. Ciguatera poisoning affects approximately 500,000 people globally each year and stems from algae consumed by these fish.
