Yet another risk for produce – Angiostrongyliasis cantanensis – Rat Lungworm

The CDC this week reports finding the spread of Angiostrongylus cantonensis , (Rat Lungworm) into Georgia. Originally described in Asia, where most human infections are reported, is now endemic in different regions of the world. In the United States, A. cantonensis was initially reported in Hawaii, and later in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida, likely introduced by infected rats and gastropods through trade routes, such as on merchant ships.

Marler Clark investigates cause of E. coli Outbreak at Huntley High

The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) and Huntley Community School District 158 are working collaboratively to respond to a recent outbreak of Shiga Toxin-Producing E. coli (STEC) at Huntley High School. There are currently seven confirmed cases of STEC, all of which involve students. The first case was identified on Sunday, September 17. At this time, there is insufficient evidence to indicate the source of the illness.

Frozen meat pizza recall for not listing soy

Green Valley Foods in Devils Lake, ND, is recalling approximately 4,062 pounds of frozen meat pizza products due to misbranding and undeclared allergens, according to USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The product contains soy, a known allergen not declared on the product label. The frozen meat pizza items were produced from September 20, 2022, through September 20, 2023, and may contain lot codes 2632 through 2633.

Irish agency reveals seafood safety cases

The agency responsible for seafood safety in the Republic of Ireland has recorded 18 potential breaches of food safety law in the first half of 2023. The Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority (SFPA) is responsible for enforcement of food law in the seafood sector up to the point of retail. Eight enforcements notices were served against businesses during the first three months of 2023 and 10 in the next quarter, as part of risk-based official controls.
