Deadly Listeria Cheese Outbreak began in 2014

As of February 6, 2024, a total of 26 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria have been reported from 11 states: Arizona 4, California 8, Colorado 4, Florida 1, Georgia 1, Nevada 1, North Carolina 1, Oregon 1, Tennessee 2, Texas 2, Washington 1. Two deaths have been reported, one from California and one from Texas. Illnesses started on dates ranging from June 15, 2014, to December 10, 2023.

The outbreak began in 2014 with the most recent patient having become sick in December 2023. At least two people have died. A new report says Listeria infections are up in 2022, with four outbreaks recorded.

Listeria cases rose in 2022, with infections linked to 33 deaths in England and Wales. In 2022, 167 cases of listeriosis were reported. This is up from 160 cases in 2021. A total of 33 people died, and 18 had listeriosis recorded as a cause of death on the death certificate. Listeriosis remains a rarely reported disease in England and Wales, but the outcome in pregnancy-related cases is often severe, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
