Dozens of ice cream products recalled in four states after testing finds Listeria

Wilcox Ice Cream of East Arlington, VT, is recalling all flavors of Wilcox brand ice cream, yogurt, and ice cream bars, as well as Leonardo’s brand gelato, because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The Vermont Department of Agriculture notified the company that one lot of the Super Premium Mint Chip manufactured on 11/14/23 could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The FDA is busy trying to find the links to two E. coli outbreaks that have thus far sickened 12 and 37. Interestingly, neither the FDA, CDC nor any state health department is reporting on the Listeria outbreak that has sickened 11. However, the FDA published a recall notice for HMC nectarines, peaches and plums after the peaches seem to have been linked to the illnesses.

A Listeria outbreak traced to peaches has turned deadly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported this afternoon that of the 11 confirmed patients, one has died. The patients are spread through seven states across the country. All 10 of the surviving patients have been hospitalized. “The true number of sick people in this outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses.

0 to 100 – ages of people sickened by Salmonella in Canada by Mexican Cantaloupe

As of November 17, there have been 14 laboratory-confirmed cases of Salmonella Soahanina and Sundsvall illness linked to this outbreak in the following provinces: British Columbia (3), Ontario (3) and Quebec (8). Additional Salmonella infections are under investigation and more illnesses associated with this outbreak may be confirmed. Individuals became sick between mid-October and early-November 2023.

Nearly 150 sick in Salmonella outbreak affecting 11 countries

Eleven countries, including the United States, have recorded almost 150 Salmonella infections that could be linked to tomatoes. Since January 2023, 149 cases of Salmonella Strathcona have been reported. Germany has the most patients, with 47, while Italy has 34. Most people fell sick between August and October. The U.S. has eight cases. Six interviewed sick people had been to Spain, Italy, Croatia, France, and Slovenia.

MAFSI Barometer: Q3 Misses Expectations

MAFSI’s Q3 Foodservice Business Barometer shows overall sales growth for the quarter missed forecasts of 3.5%, instead dropping to 2%. From July 1-Sept. 30, the Midwest saw the highest overall sales, up 3.9% as compared to Q3 2022, followed by the West (up 2.9%), South (2.2%) and Northeast (1.6%). Canada’s overall sales were reported at -1.1%, with only the furniture category seeing positive sales.

Campylobacter cases prompt raw milk recall

A raw milk producer in New Zealand has issued a recall after three people fell sick. Lindsay Farm HB recalled some batches of its branded organic raw milk as the product may contain Campylobacter. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) said three reported associated illnesses had been reported. The agency advised people who had consumed any of the implicated products and had concerns about their health to seek medical advice.
